The job
How it goes
In older houses, galvanized steel rusts shut from the inside, and the water runs brown after sitting overnight. More common here is sixties and seventies copper that's started to pinhole. One pinhole is a repair. Three in two years is a pattern.
Copper is what most of these houses have, and we join it with press fittings, which are faster and cleaner than solder. PEX is flexible tubing from a manifold, one line per fixture. It needs fewer wall openings and doesn't pinhole. Both are permitted and inspected.
A typical house takes two to four days. We work in stages, so the water's back on every evening. Drywall openings are small, and each one is listed on the bid. You stay in the house.

- Copper or PEX?
- Both work. Copper is what buyers expect. PEX goes in faster with fewer openings and doesn't pinhole. In a slab house, either one runs overhead. We can bid both.
- How long is the water off?
- A few hours at a time, and it's back on every evening.
- Do I need to move out?
- No. It's noisy for a few days and some walls get small openings.
- Is a permit required?
- Yes. It's inspected before the walls close, and the permit is in the bid.
