The job
How it goes
A slab leak is a water line leaking under or inside the foundation. Copper under concrete fails from the outside, where the pipe touches soil or the slab itself, and from the inside, where high water pressure and hard water wear it thin. Hot lines go first, because hot water is harder on copper. The tells are a warm patch on the floor, a meter that keeps turning, a bill that has jumped, or a sound of running water with nothing on.
Finding it is the first job, and it is done from above. We isolate the line with the meter and gauges, then bring in the leak-locating specialist we have used for years to listen for it through the slab and mark the spot to within a foot or so, along with any post-tensioned cables in the concrete. Then there are two ways to fix it. A spot repair opens the floor at the mark, cuts out the failed section and puts in new pipe. A reroute abandons the line under the slab and runs a new one overhead, through the attic and down the wall, so nothing is left in the concrete to fail again.
Which one is right comes down to the condition of the rest of the line. One leak on a line that is otherwise sound is a spot repair. A second leak on the same line within a year or two means the pipe itself is done, and rerouting it is cheaper than opening the floor a third time. We tell you which situation you are in, and why, before you decide.

It started as a slow shower drain. While there we traced the copper under the slab and found a leak. Brought in the leak-locating specialist we work with to mark the spot and the post-tensioned cables, saw-cut and jackhammered the closet floor, found a pinhole in a one-inch copper line and replaced the section.
