One new toilet, $849.86
Dan swaps a toilet in Thousand Oaks and shows what’s underneath: the wax ring that seals it to the drain, the two bolts that hold it still, and the water in the trap that keeps sewer gas out.
What Dan says in the video
Dan from Westlake Village put in a new toilet in Thousand Oaks for $849.86, toilet included. When the old one came out of the back bathroom, you could see what was underneath. A toilet sits on a ring of wax. When it's set down, the wax squishes and seals it to the drain pipe, so water and sewer gas can't leak out at the floor. Two bolts, one on each side, hold the toilet in place. They keep it from rocking, so the seal stays put. If the toilet rocks later, that seal can break. You might see water at the base, or smell sewer gas. There's a second seal that keeps sewer gas out of your bathroom. Guess where it is. It's the water in the bowl. It sits in a bend built into the toilet, called the trap. Gas can't get past it. When you flush, water rushes over the top of the trap. That starts a siphon, and it pulls the bowl empty. Once air gets in, the siphon stops. The bowl refills, and the seal is back. Dan set the new Toto on a fresh wax ring, hooked up a new water line, sealed the base, and put on a soft-close seat. Older toilets can use as much as six gallons a flush. In California, a new one can use 1.28, at most. If your toilet rocks, have a plumber look before it leaks. Cranking down the bolts can crack the porcelain. For more, call Dan's Plumbing or visit dansplumbing.la.
